Artist's Description
This abandoned Mansion is in Brush Park, one of Detroit's oldest historic neighborhoods.
From about 2000 to 2005 I spent time watching and photographing them as they slowly went into more decay. Past the "ugly" I could still see their charm shine though and was impressed by the amazing architect and fine craftsmanship that went into these mansions.
In this photo there's a lot going on. Through the windowless window frame, the laths, once covered by plaster, the shape of the window frame and detail around it, the variety and shapes of the bricks. In just this small part of the house there's much to see.
There's always changes going on in Brush Park. Some of the mansions have been restored but the ones that got torn down are the ones I'm glad I photographed the most and glad I have some kind of record of their beauty.

I see the sad beauty Sandra. You should check out the work of Andrew Moore, who has made part of a career out of photographing Detroit. http://www.andrewlmoore.com/photography/detroit/

Such a tribute to the skilled crafts folk of the past, Sandra. I am enchanted with this series, and I, too, am glad that you recorded these relics before their demise. like/f

I don't know what the origin of my fascination with old, crumbling buildings is, but it's not to be denied. This is a classic example ... what was certainly someone's dear pride and joy blasted to ruin. What a tragedy. I'm with you on the photographing of these beauties before it's too late. And you've done a magnificent job. We've had a little cabin up in PA for about 10 years now, and when we first got there I was fascinated by old buildings, barns mostly, but also a whole commercial section on main street of an old town. I snapped away ... now ... all gone. Amazing .. and like you .. so glad I've got my little snaps as reminders of what was. l/f

Thanks KK! As many times that I go to Detroit it still blows my mind to see so much of the city in decay, just miles and miles of it but then, some small areas arent so bad.

What a pity that this once fine home fell into such disrepair./ Great photo, Sandy! :) kk
